History

On March 3, 1803, the town Torrevieja was established after the decree of King Charles IV removing the administrative part of Royal Salt Works from La Mata to a new area. The area was then known as Torre-viexa. The history of Torrevieja began its journey holding the hands of the Royal Salt Works. At the same time, exploitation of the fish and the salt went side by side giving a thrust to the growth of the population of that area.Interestingly, both the activities are still running today in Torrevieja. However, the earthquake of 1829 devastated Torrevieja as a whole. Back then it was reconstructed under the direct supervision of the military architect Larramendi. In the last quarter of the 20th century, Torrevieja experienced population explosion leading to its current status. It’s now a cosmopolitan city in a true sense.
