Calvia is a metropolis or city on the Mellorca Island. It is located on a part of the independent community of the Balearic Islands in Spain. The town of Vila Calvia is the municipal seat of administration for the city. The exact location of the city is in the south-western portion of the Mellorca or Majorca Island. It is situated amid the Serra de Tramuntana and the Serra de Na Burguesa. It is spread over an area of 145sq.km. The city is known for its dual character of an urban settlement as well as traditional city. The city has abundance of almond and carob trees.

History

The city of Calvis was founded in 1249 when it had only 80 citizens. It is believed that the Muslims reached the city in the year 903. The Muslims were conquered by the King James I of Aragon in 1229. This era has an important place in the history of the city. It is because landing in Santa Ponsa had a deep impact on the traditional and cultural values and practices of the entire Mallorca Island. Right from the year 1248, the city has its own provincial church named as Sante Ihoannes Caviano. It is worth noting that the city is not using any flag till date.

As per 2009 census, the total population in the city is 51,774. The population density here is 357.01 per sq.km.

Climate

Calvia is believed to have a mild and stable climate. There is Mediterranean type of climate in the city. The average temperature in Calvia is 19 °C. August is the hottest month whereas January is the coldest month of the year. Both these have average temperatures of 31.0 °C and 15.1 °C respectively. There is an annual average rainfall of 410mm in the city. Most of the rainfall occurs in the month of December when there is around 81.11 mm of rainfall on an average.
