Known as Commonwealth of the Bahamas, the country consists of more than 700 islands, islets and cays in the Atlantic Ocean. The location is north of Hispaniola & Cuba, northwest of the Turks and Caicos Islands; with Florida State of US covering in the northeast. The name "The Bahamas" refer to the larger island chain which is being shared with the Turks and Caicos Islands. Britain made Bahamas as their Crown colony in 17century, after clamping down on piracy. After the Independence War in America, the Crown shifted American Loyalists in the Bahamas region. Africans form the majority of the population from this period as the Bahamas became a haven for freed African slaves: In the year 1973, the Bahamas became an independent Commonwealth realm, and retained Queen Elizabeth II as its ruler. In GDP per capita, the Bahamas is one of the wealthiest countries in the Americas after US and Canada. The Bahamas economy is based on tourism and finance.
