Brittany is a cultural district of the France, popularly known as Little Britain, it is located in the north-west portion of the country. Also it is sometimes referred to as ‘Less or Lesser Britain’. The district is spread over an area of 34,023sq.km. It is divided into five French subdivisions. On all the four sides, it is surrounded by water bodies. The place is well-known for its attractive tourist spots worldwide. It is a lovely district that has favourable weather conditions around the year for the visitors.

History

The human activity can be traced back amid 3500 and 1800 BC in Brittany. Julius Caesar overpowered the Celts living there since 56BC. The district became united in the 9th century. It became a duchy in the 10th century. Also it got its capital Rennes during this period. From 10th century to 14th century, the region struggled hard to retain its independence. Brittany got associated with France in the 15th century. Finally, it got officially integrated into France in the year 1532.

Population

The total population of Brittany is 3,195,317 as per 2012 census. During 1999 and 2000, an increase of 0.9% is noticed in the local population. Large section of the population is settled in Rennes. There is lesser population in the centre and western regions. It is worth noting that around 98% of the total local population is formed by the natives. Only 2% of the population belongs to other regions or nations.

Climate

The climate in Brittany is variable. Usually, it is supposed to be maritime climate. Mostly, there are sunny days with intermittent cloudy days. There is regular rainfall all over the region. During summers, the climate may rise up to 30°C. There is slight difference of just 15 degrees amid summers and winters temperature. There are mild weather conditions on the sea-coast in contrast to the inner land.
