History

The history of the city antecedes to the 10th century when foremost records of the name Impurio for the city were found in the paperwork. At that time, the village is supposed to have a large market. During prehistoric times, the village was occupied by the Dolmens at Marenq in the northwest and Collefrat in south. The occupancy of Ligurians in the city can be confirmed from the presence of a massive Celto-Ligurian stone wall close to Ampus. The city was also inhabited by the Romans. It is evident from Roman milestones on Aurelian Way Roman road amid Frejus and Riez. Also there are leftovers of Gallo Roman villa and a Roman bath at Billote. The hilltop of the village was the site for the feudal castle during the middle ages. The Governor of the Province named Duc d’Epernon commanded to destroy this castle in 1590. It was during Wars of Religion amid Ampus and Barjols that resulted in blood shattered fights.
