History

The history of the city can be traced back to 1035 and 1416 years when records of its original names were found. It was named as Julii in the ancient times. The Iron Age occupied the city during prehistoric times. The remains of that age could be found on the walled hilltop spots. Originally, the city was founded in the first century BC. At that time, it used to be an important stoppage on the Aurelian way.The city which was known as Forum Julii during 30BC became a settlement for veterans of the 8th Legion. The construction of port was also initiated during the same time by the Octavian. It was accompanied by bringing of captured ships from Sextus Pompey at Actium by him. Due to same reason, the city became the second largest Roman port after Ostie. Till the fall of Nero around 69AD, the city remained an important naval base. With the possession of city by the Bishop Riculphe until the 10th century, deterioration took place here. Also the commencement of modern town started with this. Constant barbarian raids made the condition of the city worse. The city was then assaulted by the Charles-Quint. King Henri II took the command of the city during 16th century. In 1707, Frejus was assaulted by Prince Eugene. Again deterioration took place in the city with the sedimentation of the port. Also there was fall in the population during this period. The city was visited by Napoleon during his return from Egypt in the year 1799 and in 1814 during his journey to deport at Elba.
