La Garde is a small town or village that is curled around a rocky summit amid Mount Coudon and the Mediterranean Sea. It is an old village of the south eastern France. It is located on the outer edge towards east of the Toulon city in the Var subdivision. It lies in the Provence Alpes Cote d’Azur district of the country. It is an independent city that has its own history. The city has still preserved its original medieval character. In Provençal language, it is also known as La Garda. Spread over an area of 15.54sq.km, it is really a nice place worth paying a visit. Les Farigoulettes folklore music group is also among the major highlights of the city.

History

The city got its name from its ancient origins. Basically, La Garde means ‘The Guard’. The foremost description of the city can be found in the paperwork of 1056. At that time, the castle of the city was a fief of the Bishops of Toulon. The castle remained under their possession till the 13th century. It was then bestowed upon the Castellanes followed by the lords of Glandevès and the Thomas. The city was assaulted many times during the French Wars of Religion. It was only in 1707 that the city was freed by Savoyard troops. The leftovers of the ancient castle in the form of a tower and the chapel can still be found in the city.

In correspondence with 2006 census records, there are total 26,005 inhabitants in the city. Its population density is 1,700persq.km.

Climate

As per viewpoint of Koppen and Geiger classification system, the climate in the city is described as Csa type. It receives more rainfall in winter season. There is little rainfall in summer. That is why the climate here is believed to be warm and temperate. All through the year, there is an average rainfall of 694mm. The month of November receives maximum rainfall at an average of 92mm. There is just 10mm of rainfall during the month of July which is the least amount of rainfall in a year. The rainfall amid these two months has a difference of 82mm. La Garde has an average temperature of 15.2 °C. At a peak temperature of 22.8 °C on an average, July is the hottest month. In complete contrast to this, January has the least temperature at an average of 8.4 °C. A variation of 14.4 °C is recorded in the average temperatures throughout the year.
