Montmeyan is a municipality in the south-eastern France. It is located in the Var subdivision in the area of Provence-Alpes-Cote d’ Azur. It is an equipped medieval village that is located at a height of around 504m above sea level. It is situated on a rocky peninsula in the middle of the plain close to the gorges du Verdon and Lac de Sainte-Croix. There are narrow streets, arched pathways, stairs and sleepers arches in the village. It is spread over an area of 3943 hectares. The major source of economy in the village is agriculture, livestock and tourism.

History

The history of the village dates back to the Middle Paleolithic times when first human civilizations inhabited the village in the Breuil Shelter. Also mankind from Neolithic and Bronze Age civilizations occupied the village. There are also traces of Roman occupation in the village. During 12th and 13th centuries, the village witnessed possession of the Parish Church by the abbeySaint-André de Villeneuve-lès-Avignon. The Order of the Temple was entered into in October 1164 by the Lord Hugh of Montmeyan. This Order of Temple disappeared from the village in 1308. Following this, the village was passed onto several hands numbers of time. The French Revolution took place in the village in 1789.

According to census of 2009, the village has a total population of 550 inhabitants. It has a population density of 14 per sq.km.

Climate

There is warm and temperate climate in the village due to more rainfall in the winter season as compared to the summers. According to Koppen and Geiger classification system, the climate here is classified into Csb type. The city has an average temperature and an annual average rainfall of 11.9 °C and 764 mm respectively. The month of July is considered to be the hottest one with an average temperature of 20.3 °C. On the other hand, the month of January is the coldest one. It has an average temperature of 4.3 °C. The average temperatures vary by 16.0 °C during the year. There is maximum rainfall in the month of October and hence it is the wettest month of the year. There is an average rainfall of around 89mm during this month. On the other hand, there is least rainfall during the month of July. It is 24mm on an average thereby making it the driest month of the year.
