Popularly known as the capital of fig, Sollies-Pont is a small town or village in the south-eastern France. This amazingly beautiful city is located in the Var district of the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur area of the country. There are vines, flowers and olive trees all around the city. It is located on the banks of the River Gapeau. The fresh figs that are also known by the name violet Sollies are the particularity of the place. It is in fact the first French village that produces figs. The village also finds mentioned in the Russian poem called as the ‘Provence’. This poem was written by Vladimir Nabokov in 1923. The city also received AOC in June 2006 following recognition and appreciation by the renowned chefs. The city expands over an area of 17.73sq.km.

History

The history of the city can be traced back to the Gallo-Roman period when the Sollies-Ville was created. Sollies-Pont was developed as a result of separation in the boundaries of Solliès-Ville and Solliès-Le-Haut. The location of the city over the Gapeau Valley offered it protection against barbaric attacks. Hence it was able to develop independently. The boundary of the city was in reality obtained in the year 1480 and it got freedom in 1797. In the history of the city, hosting of the renowned guests including Charles IX, Catherine de Medici and Louis XIV at the castle is worth-mentioning. This castle was destructed by fire and reconstructed during the year 1862. Agriculture developed in the city during 19th century. Now the city is known for production of chocolate, nougat as well as ceramic.

Sollies-Pont has a total population of 10,935 people in accordance with 2006 census records. The population density here is 620per.sq.km.

Climate

Similar to some other cities in the Provence, Sollies-Pont also enjoys a warm and temperate climate. More rainfall is attributed in the winter season as compared to the summers. In correspondence with Koppen and Geiger classification system, it is considered to be Csa type. The city has an average temperature and annual average rainfall of 14.7 °C and 708 mm respectively. The hottest and coldest months of the year are July and January. These have temperatures averaging at 22.4 °C and 7.9 °C in that order. The variation in average temperatures around the year is 14.5 °C. November is wettest and July is considered as the driest month of the year. These receive an average rainfall of 93mm and 11mm respectively. There is difference of 82mm amid the precipitation during these two months.
