History

Although the town is associated with glamorous events nowadays, the case was not so a few thousand years ago. Cannes was once a tiny and simple fishing village. The importance of the town was related to the vital trading ports of Lero and Lerina islands. Cannes is also home to the historic watchtower on the Le Suquet hill. The watchtower was built during an invasion by the Saracens in the 1100s. This watch tower at Le Suquet was the birthplace of modern day Cannes, the town we see today. Cannes was introduced to British aristocracy with the arrival of Lord Brougham in the 1900s. The Cannes we see today is a prime destination on the Cote d’Azur. It is home to the biggest film festival ever to take place anywhere in the world.

Climate

As is common in the French Riviera, Cannes goes through a Mediterranean climate. There is about 12 hours of daylight during the summer months of May to September. Summertime temperatures vary between 25°C to 30°C. The town faces a mild, comfortable and cool climate in the winter months of December to February. The temperature drops down to about 10°C during these months. The monsoon months of October and November witness annual rainfall of approximately 4.3 inches, or 110 mm. The summers are comfortable and the winters are cool. That is why the quality holiday rentals in Cannes remain crowded throughout the year.
