Toulon is a municipality in the southern France. It is situated in the Provence-Alpes-Côte-d’Azur district. It is the capital of the Var subdivision. It has a massive military port on the Mediterranean shore. Also there is an important French naval base. It is the fourth largest city on the Mediterranean coast in France. The city is known for naval construction, fishing, wine making and manufacturing of aeronautical equipment, armaments, tobacco, printing, maps, paper, shoes, and electronic equipment. It is spread over an area of 42.84sq.km.

History

Toulon has a long and rich history. The city was occupied by various civilizations during different eras. From 11th to 18th centuries, the city was inhabited by Greeks, Ligurians and Romans at different times. The arrival of Christianity and the Counts of Provence took place in the city during 5th century. The construction and development of Royal Port took place in Toulon from 15th to 18th centuries. The city became the administrative centre of the Var subdivision in 1790 after French Revolution. Following Allied landings in the North Africa during World War II, the south-eastern France was occupied by the German Army. It resulted in ruining of the French Fleet at Toulon. Vast scale destruction took place in the city due to bombing of the port. The Battle of Toulon in 1944 led to its liberation by the Free French Forces of General Jean de Lattre de Tassigny. The city became the administrative centre of the Var in 1974. The University of Toulon was opened after five years. In 1995, it became one of the French cities where the extreme-right Front National won the local elections. In 2001, the Front National was voted out of power.

Toulon enjoys a Mediterranean climate. There are mostly sunny days and summers are dry. Due to nearness to the sea, the city has a comparatively moderate climate. July is the hottest month of the year as it has an average temperature of 23.9 °C. On the other hand, January is the coldest month of the year with recorded average temperature of 9.3 °C. The city receives an average rainfall of 665mm annually. October is considered to be the wettest month as there is 93.9mm of rainfall during this month. In contrast to this, July receives the minimum of rainfall. There is an average rainfall of 6.6mm during this month. Thus it is the driest month of the year.
