History

Madrid was found by Emir Muhammad during the end of 9th century and is originally called as Mayrit. The city achieved its importance during the time of Arab occupation of Iberian Peninsula. Madrid moved to Christians from Muslims many times at the time of reinvasion. The city is presently located in the centre of Spain which was created by King Alfonso I in the year 1083. The main square in 13th century was built by John II called the Plaza Mayor. The city kept growing fast in size and the Spanish Court got shifted from its location Toledo to Madrid City in the year 1561. The Spanish constitution declared Madrid as the capital city in 20th century. The first democratic local elections happened in 1979 to elect the first Mayor of the city.

Population

The population of Madrid City increased after the city became Spain’s capital in the middle of 16th century and is stabilized from the year 1970. The city has attracted lot of immigrants world over and as per 2015 census 89.8% of the population were the Spaniards, while the other immigrants includes Europe, North Africa, Asia, Latin America and West Africa that comes upto to 11.2%.

Climate

The temperature has a considerable variation in Madrid especially in winters and summers. The pleasant weather is from May to Mid July when the average temperature ranges are between 20 and 32 degrees. July end and August are the hottest months when temperature hits 40 degrees. The temperature during night time is about 18 degrees. September the climate is pleasant and the October month provides warm climate. Rains are common in winter months.
